Oregon Trail Be sure to read ALL the following information before you begin the game.
"The year is 1848 and you are about to embark on a 2000 mile journey across North America from Independence, Missouri to Oregon Country on the Pacific coast via the fabled Oregon Trail. Awaiting upon your arrival, should you survive the arduous trek, will be 640 acres of free farmland in the fertile Willamette Valley."
This game gives a good taste of the challenges facing wagon trains trying to reach the Pacific.
Before you set off, you choose your profession, list your party members, buy your supplies, and choose your start date. There's also an option to set rate of use of food, and rate of travel. Professions determine your skills and how much start cash you have. You want to reach Oregon before winter, but if you travel too fast, with too few rests, you risk losing oxen and sickening your family members with the hardship of the trail.
You can hunt to restock your food supplies, but each hunt takes a day. You don't want to have to do too much of this or you'll be trying to cross the mountains in winter. On the hunting screen you have a stick figure to use to aim and shoot. It is hard to get the hang of, but possible. Be prepared to shoot as soon as the screen changes!
You can also trade with other travelers for supplies. Some trades offered will be good, some will not, and at that point your desperation for the item weighs against being ripped off. Supply and demand.
There are several forts along your way, providing opportunities to rest and resupply. Resting here restores the health and mood of your family. Prices of goods increase the farther you get along the trail.
Possible endings can be gruesome, though these are described, not shown.
